Nutcracker - Saturday December 3rd, 2011 - 10:30, 1:30, 4:30
The December Nutcracker performance has been an annual tradition for more than 15 years. Beginning in 1995 as a small kindergarten performance, it has evolved into a beloved and long-standing tradition at Strandwood.

More than 400 children participate each year in The Nutcracker. Divided into three different performances, each student in grades kindergarten, first, second and third (volunteer only) all perform a class dance. Principal dancers and back stage crew are chosen from grades four and five. It takes more than 100 parent volunteers to make this performance come to fruition.

For many children, The Nutcracker will be the only live stage experience they will ever participate in during their formative school years. Starting in Kindergarten as little mice, they are nervous and tentative to step on stage. In third grade, more than half of the girls audition for the coveted role of “Clara”. Although only three are chosen, the other girls are equally excited to dress for the “Party Scene” or “Chinese Tea”. By the time the kids reach 5th grade, they are more than ready to assume the lead role of Drosselmeyer or The Nutcracker. When asked what is their favorite part of Strandwood, the majority of our kids will say “The Nutcracker”.

A BIG THANK YOU to the Pleasant Hill Community Foundation and the Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education for granting us each a $1,000 grant towards audio equipment, set design, props and costumes. Through their generous donation,The Nutcracker will continue to be a fabulous show the Strandwood community can all take pride in.
